Tonight I was able to find myself a bottle of this years Chocolate Porter.  This is something that I first tried last year and was immediately impressed on how different this beer was from your typical chocolate beer.   If you are wondering where you can find, fear not it is making its way out to your local store.  So let’s get into the review:

Pouring this into a small tulip glass and taking notice of the head, it’s a tan color and very fizzy.  There isn’t much to it really, less than 1/2 of finger’s worth of head.   It looks like a soft drink that’s nearly flat.  The colors is black.  I really can’t describe it any other way, it’s black.  No light, no haze, no nothing coming through this beer.  The aroma is chocolate, malty smell. I also get a slight coffee aroma.  Taking my first sip and I get a smokey flavor.   I also pick up on the a slight cocoa bitterness.  As I drink more of the beer the back end of the taste is very much creamy or even milky.  It does finish off dry but with a slight roasted coffee flavor that doesn’t linger too long and really draws you in to drink more.
Overall, I honestly was expecting something a little more fuller at least initially.  Then as I drank more and more of this beer I find that I am really enjoying this beer.  It’s not at all over powering with one flavor but is nicely balanced.  When you pick up your bottle definitely let this warm up so that you can really enjoy this flavor.
